The railway post office , also known as the Reichspost building , to the east of Leipzig's main train station on Brandenburger Strasse , is a building from the early days of the company .

Where the east hall of Leipzig Central Station is located today, the largest terminal station , the Dresden station , stood from 1839 to 1913 . At that time it was, among other things, a transshipment point for mail between Leipzig and Dresden . Compared with the former Dresdner Bahnhof created by decision of the Saxon Oberpostdirektion the Imperial German railway post office No. 32. For years, all postal traffic was handled through this building. At that time there was even a direct connection from the train station to the building; this tunnel was filled in again at a later date.

During the GDR era , the rail post office continued to serve as a transshipment point for all parcels and letters that were sent here. a. examined for dangerous content and possibly forwarded on behalf of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) to Department M of the BVfS (District Administration for State Security) Leipzig in the " round corner ".

After the fall of the Wall, the GDR's Deutsche Post was incorporated into the Deutsche Bundespost . Another five years later, in the course of the conversion of the Deutsche Bundespost into the Deutsche Post AG, the postal railway transport was stopped and moved to the road or in the air, so that the complex was empty for more than ten years.

Todays use

The Viennese entrepreneur Rainer Maas had the building renovated and modernized at the same time. Since November 2008 it has accommodated around 500 beds from the hotel and hostel chain A&O HOTELS and HOSTELS.
