Beersheba – Eilat railway line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A railway line Be'er Scheva-Eilat ( Red-Med-Line ) is a repeatedly discussed railway project, which should close the gap in the railway connection between the two Israeli ports Ashdod ( Mediterranean Sea ) and Eilat ( Red Sea ).

history

1967

When the Suez Canal was closed to shipping until 1975 as a result of the Six Day War in 1967, a feasibility study for a Be'er Scheva – Eilat railway was commissioned as early as 1967 . She came to a positive assessment of the project. Furthermore, this approach never thrived.

21st century

In the course of the One Belt, One Road initiative of the People's Republic of China , the project received new impetus. It represents a bypass and replacement route for the Suez Canal, the operation of which can be endangered by the not always stable situation in Egypt . That is why the railway line has been planned in Israeli / Chinese cooperation since around 2011 . Among other things, consideration was given to building separate tracks for freight and passenger traffic. The goal is a passenger travel time between Tel Aviv and Eilat of two hours.
