The Candia – Manchester line was a 18-kilometer railway in New Hampshire ( United States ). The route is closed.
history
The Portsmouth and Concord Railroad already planned to build a branch line to Manchester from their main line , which was completed in 1852 . After the Concord Railroad leased the train, the money was finally there to build the line, which was completed in 1862. At the same time, however, at the urging of the Concord Railroad, the section of the main line from Candia to Concord was shut down and dismantled.
From 1889 the Concord and Montreal Railroad operated the railway line, followed by the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1895 . It was not until 1944 that the line became the property of Boston & Maine. Regular passenger traffic was discontinued in 1954, but until the early 1960s there were still mixed trains running on an irregular schedule.
In 1981 the Boston & Maine stopped the freight traffic between Candia and East Manchester, the official shutdown took place in the following year. In 1983, the management of the remaining short section in Manchester was transferred to Guilford Transportation . However, traffic on this section was stopped soon afterwards and the tracks were dismantled.
Route description
The line begins in Candia , where it branches off the older Portsmouth – Bow Junction railway line. It curves in a south-westerly direction and touches Massabesic Lake on its way towards Manchester . In the south of the city the route joins that of the Manchester – Lawrence railway line .
