The railway line Dole Junction - Brattleboro , also Fort Hill Branch , is a former railway connection in New Hampshire and Vermont ( United States ). It is about eight miles long and connects the East Northfield – Keene railway with the town of Brattleboro . The line is closed and dismantled.

history

The Boston and Maine Railroad operated the route in the Connecticut River valley north of Brattleboro together with the Central Vermont Railroad . She also owned the Springfield – East Northfield railway . For the connection of these two routes she had only one right of use, since the section of the New England Northern Railroad belonged. Since this route was quite busy and Boston & Maine did not want to be dependent on it, they built their own route parallel to it. It branched off at Dole Junction from the East Northfield – Keene railway, which was also owned by Boston & Maine. Construction began in 1912 and the link went into operation on June 23, 1913.

With Central Vermont, which also ran operations on the New England Northern, there was already an operating community for the route north of Brattleboro, which has now also been agreed on the two parallel routes between East Northfield and Brattleboro. The trains ran north over the new Fort Hill Branch, and south over the old line on the west bank of the river. Through express trains ran through the Fort Hill Branch until 1965. From 1970, the trains to Keene ran in both directions over the line and had to make head in Dole Junction, as the section from East Northfield to Dole Junction was closed. The Green Mountain Railroad ran from January 23, 1978 operations on the line and bought it on January 1, 1982. Due to the low income, however, it ceased operations on January 3, 1983 and in November 1983 the line was closed and in the episode dismantled.

Route description

The route runs in the valley of the Connecticut River, on the east bank of which it branches off from the East Northfield – Keene railway. Past the village of Hinsdale , it runs north along the riverbank and crosses the river at Brattleboro and thus the border to Vermont. The bridge is still there.
