The Georgenthal – Tambach-Dietharz (also Hirzbergbahn ) line was a branch line in Thuringia . It branched off the Gotha – Graefenroda railway line in Georgenthal and led to Tambach-Dietharz in the Thuringian Forest .

history

The railway line was opened on December 19, 1892. On September 1, 1969, passenger traffic was discontinued and the infrastructure was completely renovated with old material as part of the central superstructure renewal of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (ZOE). The goods traffic for a gas trader, the Nesselgrund gravel works, the Tambach screw works and the Geigertechnik company (plastic products, today an automotive supplier) continued to exist. Tourist traffic was supposed to be resumed in 1977, and it was already announced on the motor traffic timetable that the Deutsche Reichsbahn would take over the services between Georgenthal and Tambach-Dietharz . Nevertheless, it did not come to that, the bus operation continued.

Due to the poor condition of the route, DB Cargo stopped freight traffic at the end of 1995. The last cars were picked up on December 27, 1995 in Tambach-Dietharz. The route has not been maintained since then.

Museum train

In December 1993 the interest group Hirzbergbahn Georgenthal-Tambach (IGHB) was founded. In 1997, the association began a collaboration with the operator of the Lohmühlenmuseum, which is located directly on the route. An attempt should be made to set up a museum railway operation on the railway line .

The negotiations begun in 1998 to take over the route by the club lasted until 2006. In the meantime, the city of Tambach-Dietharz and the municipality of Georgenthal had entered into negotiations. The route has now become the property of the municipalities. The museum railroad should now only take place between Georgenthal and Georgenthal-Ort. The rest of the route was de-dedicated. A bike path has been created there . The Tambach-Dietharz train station has already been largely built on.

The Rodebachsmühle hotel and restaurant has been under new management since November 2018 .

The IGHB owns standard-gauge and narrow-gauge vehicles as well as railway equipment. It organizes exhibitions and takes part in events and actions of other associations. The steam locomotive exhibited in the Lohmühle area was scrapped in July 2018.
