The railway line Norfolk - Medway (also Medway Branch ) is a railway line in Massachusetts ( United States ). It is around six kilometers long and connects the cities of Norfolk and Medway . The line is closed and the track systems are dismantled.

history

During the construction of the Norfolk County Railroad in 1849, the town of Medway had been bypassed in order to achieve a more straightforward route. Since the city still wanted a railroad connection, local entrepreneurs founded the Medway Branch Railroad on May 1, 1849 , which was formally established on June 10, 1850 and built a branch line from Norfolk on the route of the Norfolk County Railroad to Medway and on December 29 Opened in 1852. The operation was led by the Norfolk County Railroad, which had leased the railway before construction began.

In 1861, the Charles River Railroad also opened a railway line to Medway, via which Boston could be reached more directly and without changing trains. The branch line from Norfolk to Medway was sold on May 12, 1864 to the Boston, Hartford and Erie Railroad , which they shut down and dismantled that same year.

Route description

The line branched off from the Dedham – Willimantic railway line at Norfolk Station and ran north-west. In Norfolk, the Medway Branch , which was later built on the railway line, still reminds of the route. Shortly before the only stopover in Rockville, the route crossed the Charles River . The exact location of the terminus in Medway can no longer be determined.
