The Suceava – Gura Humorului railway is the main line in Romania . It runs in the south of the Bukovina .

history

At the time of the Habsburg dual monarchy , starting from Dărmăneşti on the Chernivtsi – Suceava railway line, a line to Câmpulung Moldovenesc was put into operation in 1888 .

After the First World War , the Bukovina came to Romania. The railway line from Dărmăneşti to Câmpulung Moldovenesc was the starting point for the important crossing of the Eastern Carpathians in the direction of Transylvania , which was completed in 1940 .

However, the way via Dărmăneşti - based on the changed territorial allocation of the Bukowina - was quite cumbersome and not very efficient because of the tight curve radii. In addition, the two train stations of the district capital Suceava were far outside the city center.

After the Second World War, the Romanian government decided to build a new railway line, which should begin between the Suceava (formerly Burdujeni ) and Suceava Nord (formerly Ițcani ) stations, pass west of the center of Suceava and meet in Păltinoasa on the Dărmăneşti – Câmpulung Moldovenesc railway . Construction work began in 1951, but had to be interrupted in 1955 due to financial problems and resumed in 1959. The line went into operation in 1964. Some archaeologically valuable facilities were destroyed during the construction.

Within a short time, the newly built line replaced the old line via Dărmăneşti in terms of its importance.

The Păltinoasa station was renamed Gura Humorului at the beginning of the 2000s , whereas the station further west, originally called Gura Humorului, was called Gura Humorului Oraș .

Current situation

The line is single-track and electrified. It is part of the course book route 502 from Suceava to Ilva Mică . There are around four local and eight express trains per day and direction. The latter only stop in Suceava or Suceava Nord on the route described here. Freight traffic is also important.
