The Bahrebachmühlen Viaduct in its function as a railway bridge

The Bahrebachmühlen Viaduct is a brick railway arch bridge that was built from 1868 to 1871 as part of the construction of the Leipzig – Chemnitz railway line . However, operations across the bridge did not begin until April 8, 1872 when the railway line opened. Originally as a crossing of the Bahrebach near Borna b. Chemnitz , today the viaduct is mainly known as a technical monument above the federal highway 4 (A4).

modification

The viaduct after the renovation and renovation

The viaduct in use posed a problem for the 6-lane expansion of the A 4 between junctions 69 ( Chemnitz- Mitte) and 70 ( Chemnitz-Glösa ), as the underpass was not at right angles and the arch span was insufficient. While motor vehicle traffic was maintained, the lower parts of three pillars were removed from 2000 to 2002 and replaced with two widened passageways, each with space for three lanes and one hard shoulder. Work began in 1999 with the reinforcement of the bridge and the installation of over 400 measuring sensors. Both were removed in 2003 after the concrete substructure had been completed.

In the spring of 2009 work began on renewing the bridgehead on the Burgstädt direction track. The operation continued except for brief interruptions on the second track. The bridgehead was completely dismantled and replaced with a modern concrete substructure. In September 2009 the first track was completed and the second started.
