Baios

Baios ( Greek  Βαῖος , but also Βάϊος, Βαιός ) is a figure in Greek mythology .

Baios was the helmsman of Odysseus and was considered an eponymous hero of various localities. According to Stephanos of Byzantium , Mount Baia on the island of Kephallenia is said to have been named after Baios. But the name of the city of Baiae on the Gulf of Naples was also traced back to Baios in ancient times, after Timaeus of Tauromenion named it around 300 BC. In the Italic founding legends and had his grave settled there. This was followed, perhaps based on other sources, by Varro and Strabon , who only narrated that, according to some, the city of Baiae was named after a companion of Odysseus named Baios. Silius Italicus calls Baiae in the 1st century " Ithakesian site of Baios" ( sedes Ithacesia Bai ).
