Bairin-ji (Taitō)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bairin-ji ( Japanese 梅林 寺 , dt "Temple of the Plum Grove ") is a temple of the Sōtō school in the Tōkyōter district of Taitō .

Overview

Plan of the temple (see text)

In addition to the abbot and monk buildings, the small temple has only one main hall (本 堂, Hondō; 1 in the plan) and behind it the cemetery (F). The short way to the main hall is lined with the eponymous plum trees.

In the cemetery is the grave of Abe Tomonoshin (阿 部 友 之 進;? - 1753), who was also called Abe Shōō (阿 部 将 翁) - something like "Old Lord Abe" - because of his familiarity with the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune . On the instructions of the Shogun, he had laid out a herb garden that was later expanded to become today's Koishikawa Botanical Garden . Next is one of the two tombs of the haiku poet Kawahigashi Hekigotō . The other grave is in Hōtō-ji , Kyōto .
