Hōtō-ji

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hōtō-ji ( Japanese 宝塔 寺 ) is a Japanese temple of the Nichiren School in the Kyoto district of Fushimi .

The temple arose from the Gokuraku-ji ( 極 楽 寺 ), a temple of the Shingon school , which is said to have been founded by the monk Shōbō ( 聖 宝 ) and built by Fujiwara no Mototsune . Nichizō ( 日 像 ; 1269-1342), a disciple of Nichiren's disciple Nichirō ( 日 朗 , 1245-1320), converted this temple in 1307 into a meditation hall for the Lotus Sutra .

The four-footed gate ( 四脚 門 , shikyakumon ) and the two-tier Tahō pagoda ( tahōtō ; special feature: first step angular, second step round) come from the Muromachi period .
