When Dhaka grew rapidly as the then capital of East Pakistan in the late 1950s, the idea of a centrally located large mosque also arose . For this purpose, the Baitul Mukarram Mosque Society was founded in 1959 . A plot of land on the edge of the old town, at the transition to the new Dhaka, was found to be the ideal building site. Construction began on January 27, 1960 and was inaugurated in 1963.

T. Abdul Hussain Thariani was the executive architect of the mosque complex, who also took into account shops, offices, a library and parking facilities.
