Bajaj Chetak

Bajaj Chetak is a series of scooters from the Indian manufacturer Bajaj Auto . The scooter was built almost unchanged from 1972 to 2009.

Naming

The model name goes back to " Chetak ", the legendary war horse of Maharana Pratap (1540–1597), which he rode in 1576 in the Battle of Haldighati .

Model history

Bajaj Auto was a license manufacturer for the Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio & CspA from 1959 to 1974 . During this period, the first Chetak with the sheet steel chassis of the Vespa 150 Sprint and an air-cooled two-stroke single- cylinder engine under the right, removable side jaw came onto the Indian market in 1972 . After the cooperation between Piaggio and Bajaj broke up in the dispute, Bajaj continued to produce this model.

The body design varied a little over the years. For example, handlebar housings with rectangular headlights were used instead of round lamps. The electrical supply was provided from the start of construction with a voltage of 12 volts. The 10-inch wheels were brought to a halt with 130 mm drum brakes at the front and rear . In the early 1990s, the Chetak was briefly equipped with four-stroke engines , but it turned out that the technology was not yet mature enough. Until 1998, the buyer could choose between the versions “Standard” with bench seat and “Classic” with a swinging saddle and pillion roll for the 125cc and 150cc scooters, after which there were only the Classic seats in advance.

In 2004 the Chetak was successfully launched with Wonder Gear four-stroke engines. For the first time, the vehicles could now also be made to run with an electric starter in addition to a kick starter . They also had a bench again.
