Bacteriolytic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A bacteriolytic (also called bacteriolytic agents ) describes substances that mediate the death of a bacterial cell through lysis . Bacteriolytics are bactericides .

properties

The lysis can e.g. B. caused by a dissolution of the cell wall or by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. Antibiotics that inhibit cell wall synthesis, such as penicillin , and chemicals that destroy the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria are summarized under the term bacteriolytic. Some bacteriocins and bacteriophages are bacteriolytic. The proteins lysozyme and the membrane attack complex produced by animals serve to defend against bacterial pathogens by perforating the cell wall.
