Balakot (Indus culture)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balakot is an archaeological dig in Baluchistan ( Pakistan ). Here the remains of an approximately 4.5 hectare site of the Indus culture could be examined. It is one of the few port cities of this culture.

In the lower strata (period A) of Balakot, Nal ceramics, those of the Quetta culture and those of the Amri culture were found . In period B the place belonged to the Indus culture and shows all typical features of this culture, such as a citadel in the west and next to it a civil city, as well as a sewer system. In the fortress there were houses made of mud brick. One of them had a bath. A large building was poorly preserved, but some rooms were decorated with stucco. Seals of the Indus culture were found. The investigation of organic materials showed that fish were mainly consumed. In addition, large quantities of unprocessed snail shells and mussel shells were found , which point to an industry for processing mollusc shells .

The site was surveyed by GFDales University of California, Berkeley in 1973 and 1976 .
