Balearic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balearic (katalan. [Català] balear ) is a collective name for the dialects of the Catalan language spoken in the Balearic Islands , collectively also called island Catalan .

The Balearic dialects ( mallorquí , menorquí , eivissenc , formenterer) belong morphologically (not only geographically) to the eastern Catalan dialects. The reason for this is that after the conquest by the Catalan-Aragonese crown in the 13th century , the Balearic Islands were predominantly populated by Eastern Catalans. The Balearic varieties have a lot in common, which also have an impact on the spelling and visibly distinguishes the island Catalan as a dialect group from the varieties of Catalan spoken on the mainland.

An example that is also common to tourists is the use of the dialectal definite articles es (“der”, pl. Els ) and sa (“die”, pl. Ses ) , which is also common in the Balearic Islands in written language . Sa is shortened to s' before vowel calls and occurs in numerous Balearic place names and other toponyms (e.g. S'Albufera , S'Arenal , S'Illot , S'Hort del Rei). The articles in standard Catalan ( el, la, l ', les ), on the other hand, are rarely used and usually only in a very formal style .
