The Balgarska Schelesnopatna Kompania ( Bulgarian Българска железопътна компания (БЖК) , transl. Bulgarska Železnopitna Kompanija (BŽK) , German Bulgarian railway company ) is a private Bulgarian railway company . The BŽK is in competition with the much larger Bulgarian state railway BDŽ EAD . BŽK is a subsidiary of the private Romanian railway company Grup Feroviar Roman (GFR).

Goods are only transported on the Sofia - Karlovo - Burgas railway lines and the Ruse - Shumen - Karnobat railway lines .

In the more than 100-year history of the Bulgarian railway, BŽK is the second private railway company to have received a license to operate the railway in Bulgaria. The third competitor is the smaller, private Bulgarian railway company Bullcargo .

Company history

BŽK was founded in 2004 with purely private capital as a Bulgarian-Romanian railway company and in 2005 received a license for rail transport. The business objective is to carry out the transport of goods by rail both in Bulgaria and abroad. The company headquarters are in Sofia . The Chairman of the Board of Directors is Philip Rombaut. He is also the director of Agrochim and the former director of Jumikor in Pirdop . The Executive Director is Vladimir Duntschew, who has many years of experience in managing the Bulgarian State Railways.

First, the BŽK carried out goods transport with the locomotive 40-0177-2, which was rented in 2006 by the "Grup Feroviar Roman". In 2006 and 2007 further locomotives of the Romanian series 40 with an output of 5400 kW were put into service. In 2008 BŽK had 5 of its own locomotives. The BŽK does not have its own wagons. In the summer of 2007, BŽK from Great Britain bought two used electric, four-axle series 87 (87019-6) locomotives . These pull the trains of the company "Jumikor - MED" (bulg. Юмикор - МЕД), Polimeri AG (bulg. Полимери - АД) and Sodi-Dewnja (bulg. Соди - Девня).

As a customer is on in Burgas based subsidiary "Lukoil Bulgaria" of Lukoil directed.

In the period from 2005 to 2007, BŽK's share of rail freight transport in Bulgaria rose from 0.06% to 7.71%, mainly due to the displacement of the Bulgarian State Railways, the largest Bulgarian railway company.
