Balje (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balje was a volume measure for hard coal in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. A distinction was made between the small Balje and the large Balje. The Balje as a lime measure depending on the Töver had a different volume measure. The coal measure was already mentioned in the decree of January 16, 1837 as a relation to the Schaumburg mountain measure.

  • 144 small baloons = 1 mountain load (Schaumburger) = 3534 cubic inches
  • 48 large baloons = 1 mountain load (Schaumburger) = 10602 cubic inches

Bremen dimensions

  • 1 large bag = 3 small bags = 0.149 cubic meters = 148.64 liters
  • 1 small balje = 0.05 cubic meters = 49.55 liters
    • 1 cart = 0.1 cubic meter = 99.1 liters
    • 1 bucket = 0.0124 cubic meters = 12.39 liters

Conclusion:

  • 1 cubic meter = 6.728 large baloons
  • 1 cubic meter = 20,183 small balloons
  • 1 cubic meter = 10.1 carts
  • 1 cubic meter = 80,732 buckets
