Ballads from Old Vienna is a volume of poetry by the Austrian writer Franz Karl Ginzkey , published in 1923. The edition was illustrated and furnished by Maria Grengg . As early as 1922 a book with the same content appeared under the title Once Upon a Time. Old Viennese ballads with illustrations by Heinrich Lefler . Five ballads from it have already been published in the volume Ballads and New Songs from 1910.

content

The 17 ballads deal with topics from the history of Vienna , especially anecdotes about historical figures such as Prince Eugen , Mozart or Abraham a Sancta Clara and traditions, sagas and legends from medieval Vienna. Most of the ballads have a humorous character. A local patriotic trait and a glorifying view, especially of the historical people of Vienna, are unmistakable. The best-known ballad is probably the one about dear Augustine ; other popular myths are used in “The Basilisk ” and “The Heavenly Porter”.
