Ballet music from "Die Fledermaus"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ballet music from “Die Fledermaus” is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn or Richard Genée . It was performed for the first time on April 5, 1874 in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.

Remarks

This work is actually part of the operetta Die Fledermaus . In the score it is listed as number 11a. There are five dances, which are headed Spanish, Scottish, Russian, Bohemian and Hungarian . The Viennese waltz was deliberately omitted because it occurs frequently in other parts of the operetta. This ballet music was intended for the second act of the operetta at the feast of Prince Orlofsky . It was played that way when the operetta was premiered. However, for whatever reasons, it has become common practice to delete this music from performances of the operetta and replace it with other pieces of music by Strauss or other well-known composers. Perhaps one wants to lend Prince Orlofsky's festival even more glamor in this way . Be that as it may, ballet music is rarely heard in operettas, if at all. This also applies to records and CD recordings. Otherwise it is occasionally performed in concert. In the main article on Die Fledermaus it is mentioned that Johann Strauss appeared mainly as the author of the melodies (the operetta), while much of the instrumentation was done by Richard Genée. Against this background, it must remain open to whom this ballet music can now be assigned.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 24 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
