Balloons over Waikato is a balloon festival held annually in Hamilton , New Zealand . It extends over five days in autumn and attracts national and international balloonists. The festival takes place mainly in the Hamilton Lake district, with the highlight of the festival, the balloon glow , being celebrated on the grounds of the University of Waikato with around 80,000 spectators. In 2008, the festival wasvoted “ Best Event in Waikato ”in a reader survey by the Waikato Times .
