The Waikato Times is New Zealand's fifth largest regional daily newspaper . The newspaper is now part of the Fairfax Media group, but its editorial headquarters are still in Hamilton .
history
The first edition of the Waikato Times appeared on May 2, 1872 with the addition and Thames Valley Gazette in the newspaper logo. Its editors were George Jones and Henry Holloway , two experienced newspaper makers from New Zealand who initially produced the paper in Ngāruawāhia for the Waikato District .
In 1875 they relocated the newspaper to Hamilton and called it from then on just Waikato Times . At the same time the ownership changed, Jones left the paper and together with the lawyer Frederick Whitaker from Auckland , the Bank of New Zealand took control of the newspaper house from then on.
In 1878, still owned by the bank, George Edgecumbe , a local politician, ran the business of the paper, but the bank separated from him in 1896 and sold the Times to James Shiner Bond , later mayor of Hamilton and owner of the Waikato Advocate . In response, Edgecumbe founded the Waikato Argus . Bond, however, merged his Waikato Advocate with the Times and published his new newspaper as an evening paper under the name of the Waikato Times .
After 20 years of competition, the Waikato Argus and the Times were finally merged on September 10, 1915 and continued as an independent daily newspaper under the name Waikato Times .
today
The Waikato Times has belonged to the Australian media group Fairfax Media since 2003 , which in that year first merged the paper with 14 other New Zealand newspapers and media companies under INL Publishing Limited and later integrated it directly into Fairfax Media .
After the Saturday edition of the newspaper had already been switched from the evening edition to the morning edition in 2003, this did not happen for the weekly editions until September 5, 2011.
