Sophus Müller

Sophus Otto Müller (born May 24, 1846 in Copenhagen ; † February 23, 1934 ) was a Danish prehistoric scientist .

Life

Müller's father was C. Louis Müller. Sophus Müller studied philology at the University of Copenhagen and completed his studies there in 1871 with the acquisition of a master's degree. Until 1876 he worked as a teacher. During this time he also worked as an assistant to the Museum of Nordic Antiquities. In 1878 he was employed by the museum and in 1880 with the dissertation Dyreornamentiken i Norden for Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1881 Müller was secretary of the Royal Archaeological Society and editor of the journals Aarböger for Nordisk Oldkyndighed and Nordiske Fortidsminder . In 1885 he became inspector of the museum and in 1892, after the museum had been reorganized into the National Museum of Denmark , secretary of the museum's 1st department, the department of Nordic antiquities. In 1895 he was appointed museum director. In 1888 his two-volume work Ordning af Danmarks Oldsager ( Outline of the Antiquities of Denmark ) was published. His research on the prehistory of Denmark was reflected in his work Vor Oldtid ( Our Prehistory ) in 1897 . In 1921 he retired.

In December 1885 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .
