Balloon glow is the process of making hot air balloons glow at dusk or in the dark.

During the glowing of the balloons, the balloons are set up ready to drive at dusk. However, there is no take-off, the balloons remain on the ground. The balloon is filled with hot air by actuating the burner and thus erected. The balloon envelope is illuminated from the inside by the flame of the burner, so that the balloon begins to "glow". This creates a light effect that illuminates the area around the balloon . The balloon acts like a giant light bulb .

A burner is usually used for glowing balloons, which is particularly quiet and is therefore also called a " cow burner " (because grazing animals nearby are not frightened by the burner noise). It is technically difficult, on the one hand, to set the flame strong enough so that the balloon is full enough and shines brightly enough, but on the other hand, to prevent it from taking off.

At the end of the balloon glow or as a supplement to it, burners are also ignited without heating the balloons and causing them to glow. This process is called "torches". Occasionally (e.g. when the wind is too strong or too gusty) the torch also replaces the balloon glow, occasionally illuminated balloons are supplemented by torches. If the glow of the balloon is accompanied by music, individual balloons in the style of a water organ are often used like musical instruments; then not all balloons are constantly illuminated at the same time.

The balloon glow is usually not the only "event" that is offered to the audience. It is often accompanied by music. It is often included in festive events or forms the opening or closing event for balloon races ( Montgolfiaden ).
