Cow burner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cow burner (also known as the whisper burner or pig burner ) is an additional nozzle arrangement that can be used by a separate valve in the gas burner of hot air balloons . When the valve is operated, the flame burns more quietly and the often observed initial bang does not occur. This is to prevent cows and other animals from being frightened when driving over pastures. The cow burner should also be used over residential areas.

With the cow burner, the liquid gas is burned directly (liquid) and not passed through the evaporator coils. Comparatively little heat is generated, which leads to a slower change in the lift of the balloon. Therefore, the cow burner is not suitable for quick maneuvers such as landing. In addition, a lot of soot is produced, which over time turns the inside of the balloon envelope dark.

During the so-called night glow, the setting up of hot air balloons in the evening without the intention of taking off, the whisper burner is preferred because of the brighter flame. The balloon envelopes are transformed into huge flickering lanterns . To entertain the audience, the choreographed play of lights of the balloons - occasionally rotating around the vertical axis - is accompanied by music.
