Arnaldo Ribeiro

Arnaldo Ribeiro , also Dom Arnaldo , (born January 7, 1930 in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais , Brazil ; † December 15, 2009 ibid) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto .

Life

Arnaldo Ribeiro, eldest of seven children, studied philosophy in Belo Horizonte. From 1948 he lived at the Colégio Pio Brasileiro in Rome and studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He received on 13 March 1954, the sacrament of Holy Orders in the Lateran Church . Then he was hospital chaplain in Vera Cruz, later rector of the seminaries in Vera Cruz and Belo Horizonte.

On November 6, 1975, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Sicilibba and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte . He was ordained episcopal on December 27th of the same year in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Sorrows in Belo Horizonte by the Archbishop of Belo Horizonte, João Resende Costa SDB; The co- consecrators were José Ivo Lorscheiter , Bishop of Santa Maria, and Serafím Fernandes de Araújo , coadjutor archbishop in Belo Horizonte and later cardinal. From 1976 to 1989 he was also Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. He was the coordinator of the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1980. From 1987 to 1989 he was chairman of the East II region of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB) and a member of the CNBB permanent council responsible for youth pastoral care. He was a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Translation of Liturgical Books of the CNBB.

On December 28, 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto. More than 10,000 believers attended the farewell ceremony at the Ginásio da Cava do Bosque stadium in Belo Horizonte. On April 5, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.

He died of complications from multiple organ failure in Madre Teresa Hospital in Belo Horizonte and was buried in the São Sebastião Cathedral in Ribeirão Preto.
