Ballymacdermott

Ballymacdermot ( Irish Bhaile Mhic Dhiannada ; also "The Fairy ring" or "The Cashla" ) is an approximately 3000 BC. BC built. Court Tomb in the south of County Armagh in Northern Ireland . It is located in the "Ó Fiaich Country" (named after Cardinal Tomás Séamus Ó Fiaich ) on the southeastern slopes of Ballymacdermot Mountain, west of the southern suburbs of Newry . Court Tombs are among the megalithic chamber tombs ( English chambered tombs ) of the British Isles . With around 400 specimens, they are found almost exclusively in Ulster in the north of Ireland or in Northern Ireland.

The layout of the facility roughly corresponds to that of Creggandevesky - top left

The unusually large forecourt, seven meters wide and five meters deep, is formed by a stone circle segment that is more than 180 °, with the largest stones, unlike other systems of this type, being on the outside at the tips. The six-meter-long gallery in the center consists of three chambers separated by side posts. The removed ceiling structure of the chambers consisted of cantilever vaults . Some of the ceiling's corbels have been preserved. A large part of the stone hill still surrounds the gallery.

Ballymacdermot was investigated several times in the 19th century by John Bell of Killevy Castle, one in one of the chambers urn with cremated remains excavated. Bell described the Cairn in 1816 in Newry Magazine. During the Second World War, some of the bricks on the facade were smashed. In 1962, the mound was excavated and restored, only fragments of pottery, worked flint and fragments of cremated bones were found.

The megalithic complexes of Annaghmare , Ballykeel and Clontygora and the churches of Killevy are close by .
