Balmes de Montbrun
The Balmes de Montbrun are medieval cave dwellings on the Plateau du Coiron in the Ardèche department in southern France .
geography
The abandoned basalt caves are located at an altitude of around 500 m in an extinct volcanic cone between the villages of Saint-Jean-le-Centenier , Berzème and Saint-Gineis-en-Coiron .
history
It is believed that the first caves were dug into the basalt in the early Middle Ages . The settlement was abandoned between the 15th and 16th centuries. The residents moved to the localities in the vicinity.
