The balms on the Buchfarter Schlossberg

The Balsamine in Buchfart (Thuringia) is a building that is one of the cultural monuments in the Weimarer Land district and is located on the Schlossberg Buchfart in the Middle Ilm Valley conservation area. It houses an inn. Its location offers a view of Buchfart and the Ilm Valley, which makes it a popular excursion destination in the area.

The balsam is named after the aromatic smell of locust trees (balsamines) that were already in bloom here at the original excursion destination “Güntsches Ruh”. "Güntsches Ruh" was a rest area with benches and a small refuge, which was opened on the initiative of the retired Chief Postal Secretary Güntsche was built. "Güntsches Ruh" is rooted in the area between Buchfart , Hetschburg , Vollersroda and Possendorf that was developed around 1890 by the members of the Thuringian Forest Association Weimar with paths, benches and excellent prominent spots . The Possendorfer Balduin Zorn (1863-1936), leaseholder of the community tavern in Buchfart, bought a wooden coffee house in Erfurt for a flower exhibition, which he dismantled on site and then rebuilt on the Schlossberg. This inn "Waldhaus Schlossberg" became a popular place for excursions. In the 1920s, the art-loving Pfläging family leased the restaurant from the landlords Zorn. From then on there was musical entertainment in addition to the gastronomy and the view from the Schlossberg into the Ilm Valley. The inn burned down completely on January 14, 1927. The owner of the property, Balduin Zorn, rebuilt the house, today's Balsamine, two years later.

From the 1950s onwards, the balm was used as a children's holiday  camp by the HO Weimar in the summer months . The EOS  Friedrich Schiller Weimar used the building for several years as school camp. In 1962 the Balsamine changed hands and was sold by Charlotte Natzel, a granddaughter of the first client, Balduin Zorn, to the Paul Schäfer shoe factory in Erfurt. At this time, the balconies facing the south slope were glazed and the kitchen wing was modernized. Seven bungalows were built in the area of the forest and the new owners committed to continue operating the inn. In the 1990s, the balms were held in trust until they were closed. The excursion restaurant fell into disrepair despite several private rescue attempts. In 2007, after three years of renovation, the Balsamine opened its doors again.
