Baltihat

Baltihat was the title of the wives of the Emperor of Ethiopia in the Middle Ages . Though of the Christian faith, the early emperors had several legitimate wives. The two main women carried the title Baltihat . A distinction was made between the Right Baltihat and the Left Baltihat . In the hierarchy at the Ethiopian imperial court, the Left Baltihat was higher in rank. When the emperors of Ethiopia went over to monogamy , the title was lost.
