The Bamei Valley ( Chinese  壩 美  /  坝 美 , Pinyin Bàměi ; in German about "beautiful plain") is a valley in the Guangnan district in the Chinese province of Yunnan, which is completely enclosed by mountains .

Around 600 very sedentary people, including a dozen communist party members , live in the valley, which is only three square kilometers in size , and only a few look for a job outside of it. They live primitively, but feel secure and shy away from the unrest outside. There is neither a power line nor a TV, which makes the desire for more entertainment a long way off.

The locals cultivate grain , rice and sugar cane in the valley . Since the population lives mainly from agriculture, parts of the harvest are exchanged for handicrafts, the valley can be self-sufficient.

The only public building is a school for 3 classes, the teacher is the only person from outside.

The only access to the valley is a river trip on the Tuoniang through a cave.

Since people are very isolated, their lives and desires are also very simple. Most of the girls aspire to the profession of teacher, the boys that of boat operator.

The official language is Mandarin , but the local dialect dominates everyday life.
