The symmetrical volcanic cone Bamus (also known by the local population as South Son) is located southwest of the Ulawun volcano (known as North Son). These two volcanoes are the highest in the 1000 kilometer long volcanic chain of the Bismarck Archipelago . The Andesitic stratovolcano is densely forested and its crater, filled with a lava dome, has broken open to one side. On the south flank there is another volcanic cone and on the south-east flank there is a crater with a diameter of 1.5 kilometers. The volcano is covered with deposits from pyroclastic flows. Based on the radiocarbon dating method , three eruptions in the years 350 BC. Chr. ± 75 years, 270 BC Chr. ± 50 years and 1650 ± 50 years can be proven. Historical records tell of another eruption in 1886 (± 8 years).
