Ban Kao ( Thai : บ้าน เก่า ) is a village community in Mueang Kanchanaburi District , Province of Kanchanaburi , in west central Thailand . The place is known for the first archaeological excavation of barrows in Thailand.

The first excavation was carried out by a Thai-Danish expedition in 1961/62 under Per Sørensen on a hill where many pottery shards and stone axes had already been found. An area of almost 400 m² was opened , which turned out to be a place of burial and today is one of the most important sources of knowledge about prehistoric Thailand. Gradually 44 graves were found in which the dead were stretched out on their backs and buried with additions. Among these were clay vessels, stone axes and jewelry made from seashells. According to radiocarbon dating , the settlement was between 2300 and 1500 BC. Settled.
