Banana fig
The banana fig , also called Longue d'Août or Jerusalem , is a fig variety of the Ficus carica species , which is known for its excellent winter hardiness and good taste. The banana fig is a double-bearing house fig that tends to produce small trees due to its weak, compact growth.
The abbreviation "LdA" is widespread among fans of Longue d'Août.
tree
The banana fig has a slow, compact growth and in Central Europe usually only reaches a height of about 3 m, but a slightly larger width. The leaf is usually five-lobed and deeply incised.
fruit
The flowering figs of this variety ripen quite late, often not until August. They are green to yellow and sometimes have a hint of red when fully ripe. The large, pear-shaped, sometimes almost banana-shaped figs are up to 20 cm long and weigh about 100 grams. The autumn figs ripen in Central Europe from September to October, are rounder, darker and weigh only about 60 grams. The pulp is pink. The fruit tastes good, especially when it has got a lot of sun and the tree is not on soil that is too wet. In a comparison planting in Spain, the variety turned out to be more productive than the variety Brown Turkey .
Winter hardiness
The banana fig is a very hardy variety and is successfully cultivated outdoors in Germany. However, when the soil is very wet, the tree suffers, becomes susceptible to disease and loses its excellent winter hardiness.
