The Banamex or Banco Nacional de México ( dt .: National Bank of Mexico ) is one of the largest credit companies in Mexico , based in the historic center ( Centro Histórico ) of Mexico City. Today it belongs to Grupo Financiero Banamex , a company that emerged in 2001 from the sale of Grupo Financiero Banamex-Accival to Citigroup Inc. , where the traditional name Banamex was taken over.

In 1929 Banamex opened a branch in New York City and offered savings accounts for the first time . From 1958, private individuals could also take out loans from Banamex. In the course of technical developments, the bank had its first computer in the head office area from 1966, and in 1972 the first branches offered a 24-hour service. In 1981, the California Commerce Bank was merged with Banamex, which had also been part of the global financial telecommunications network since 1977 . In 1982, under President José López Portillo, all private Mexican banking companies were nationalized. In the 1980s, the Banamex Visa and Mastercard were offered for the first time . Banamex was reprivatised in 1991 and in August 2002 the credit institution was formally taken over by Citigroup.
