Bandwidth length product

Bandwidth limitation due to media length

The bandwidth length product is the product of the maximum bandwidth and length of a fiber optic cable . In addition to attenuation, it is another important parameter for the quality of the fiber. It is an important parameter for multimode fibers .

B` = B * l (unit MHz * km)

B` is the bandwidth length product in MHz * km, B is the bandwidth in Hz and l is the fiber length in kilometers.

A fiber with a bandwidth length product of 1200 MHz · km and a fiber length of 1000 m can cope with a bandwidth of 1200 MHz. With a fiber length of 500 m, transmission can even be carried out with a bandwidth of 2400 MHz. Conversely, with a fiber length of 2000 m, the bandwidth must be throttled to 600 MHz.

Due to the high quality of the single-mode fiber , you usually do not specify this size here and limit yourself to the attenuation values.
