Tape salad

Tape salad from a compact cassette

A tape salad is the colloquial term for a magnetic tape entangled in the mechanics of a playback device, for example in a cassette or video recorder . In the case of compact cassettes , the tape can also be damaged in the cassette itself, for example through fast-forwarding and rewinding changes, uneven tape travel or too loose or too tight winding. Magnetic tapes that are no longer smooth increase the size of a roll and lead to tape salad.

For the provisional removal of a tape salad, a pen of the appropriate diameter is usually inserted into the opening of the tape reel and the pencil that has run off the reel is inserted into the opening of the tape reel, in the case of compact cassettes it is traditionally a pencil (ideally with a hexagonal shaft, its functionality is comparable to a hexagon socket wrench) Tape is rewound by turning the pen.

With the spread of CD and DVD , this type of technical malfunction was more and more forgotten. Hence the word Bandsalat was in 2006 added to the list of endangered words.

On February 19, 2005, the question “What is a salad counter?” Was asked in the program Genial besides . The question was answered and explained as a switching contact in a film camera that senses the mechanical tension of the film and triggers the stop of the film transport if the film is torn and prevents a “film salad”.
