Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is a film festival for outdoor and adventure films from around the world that takes place every fall in the Canadian community of Banff , Alberta .

The festival

The mountain community has been celebrating the weeklong Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival here since 1976, which attracts around 12,000 visitors each year. The initiator of the festival was Mike Mortimer , who performed as Master of Ceremonies at the festival for many years .

From around 1000 film submissions from around the world, the works of the most talented filmmakers will be awarded in Banff. The submitted productions come from 39 countries and are made by both sport-loving students and professional teams such as the BBC or National Geographic. The prizes are awarded by the international jury in seven categories: "Grand Prize", "Climbing", "Mountain Sports", "Mountain Environment", "Mountain Culture", "Short Mountain Film" and "Feature-Length Mountain Film". The viewers of the film festival ultimately decide on the winner of the "People's Choice Award" category.

The festival is a founding member of the International Alliance for Mountain Film .

The world tour

Since 1986 the films have been on a world tour immediately after the festival. As part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour , the award-winning films will be shown in around 25 countries on six continents and will reach a total of more than 170,000 viewers worldwide.
