The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (also called BUET ; Bengali : বাংলাদেশ প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় , Bāṃlādeś Prakauśal Biśbabidyālaẏ , Bangladesh Prakaushal Bishbabidyalay ) is a state technical university in Dhaka , Bangladesh . With around 4,000 students, it is one of the most important technical universities in Bangladesh.
history
The origins of the BUET go back to the surveying school founded in Nalgola near Old Dhaka in 1876 , which initially trained surveyors for railway construction. With funds from the Nawab family, this school became the Ahsanullah School of Engineering , which offered 3-year diploma courses in technical subjects. After the partition of India in 1947, the school was expanded under the direction of the University of Dhaka to Ahsanullah Engineering College , which offered bachelor's degrees. In 1962 the university was renamed the East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (EPUET) . Since then, close contacts have been maintained with Texas A&M University . After Bangladesh gained independence in 1971, the university was given its current name, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) .
