Banguisto

Banguisto is a settlement in the Niamey V Arrondissement of the city of Niamey in Niger .

The informal settlement is located on the northern edge of the Karadjé district in a marshy oxbow lake of the Niger River . It was created to the displeasure of the city administration by the division of land, which was followed by the construction of simple mud houses. A market specializing in onions was established in Banguisto.

The district is located on an alluvial floor and is regularly exposed to flooding in the rainy season in July and August. The Niger oxbow lake carries water during this time. Serious flood damage occurred in 1998, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2017. In 2017, 17 residential buildings were destroyed and one person died. The Nigerien theater maker Oumarou Aboubacari Bétodji processed the repeated floods in Banguisto 2015 in the play Quatre fois n'est pas coutume! .
