Karadjé is a district ( French quartier ) in the Arrondissement Niamey V of the city of Niamey in Niger .

geography

The district is surrounded on three sides by the areas of various institutions: in the north is the Abdou Moumouni University Niamey , in the east the Center Régional AGRHYMET and in the west the main customs office. In the south, along national road 6, the border with the Banga Bana district runs . Karadjé extends over an area of about 160.4 hectares including the main customs office .

There are two small temporary lakes in the district, one at the main customs office, the other in a lowland area that merges into the AGRHYMET site. Karadjé lies on an alluvial soil that mainly allows infiltration. There the groundwater is at risk of being contaminated. In the north, however, the groundwater level is so high that no infiltration is possible, which in turn increases the risk of flooding.

The standard scheme for street names in Karadjé is rue KR 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by KR for Karadjé and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations.

history

The settlement existed before 1937, the year when the development of various districts in Niamey began in Plateau on the other bank of the Niger. Karadjé was incorporated into Niamey in the 1970s after the Kennedy Bridge was built over the Niger River , which encouraged the capital to expand to the right bank of the Niger. During the uranium boom from 1977 to 1980, the district was restructured and expanded to include the main customs office. On the northern edge of Karadjé, the informal settlement Banguisto arose in an oxbow lake of the Niger River . In the 1980s, Karadjé was temporarily merged with Lamordé to form a district. In the flood disaster of 2010 , which hit Niamey on the night of August 5th to 6th, Karadjé was one of the districts hardest hit, along with Kombo , Kossey , Lamordé and Zarmagandey . In Karadjé, 17 houses were flooded and 19 more were declared in danger of collapse. The relocation of around 750 households affected by renewed flooding in 2012 from the Karadjé, Lamordé, Kirkissoye and Nogaré districts to the new Séno district was completed in February 2013.

Infrastructure

The 3.2 hectare market area of Marché Harobanda occupies the southwest of the district . The market has existed since 1970 and was redesigned in 1994 and 2001. Its charisma extends over the entire urban area of Niamey. In Karadjé there is a health center (Center de Santé Intégré) , which in 2014 was responsible for caring for around 28,000 people. The public primary school Ecole primaire de Karadjé was founded in 1987.
