Pont Kennedy is a neighborhood ( French : quartier ) in the Arrondissement Niamey V of the city of Niamey in Niger .

geography

Boulevard du Developpement on the northern edge of Pont Kennedy (2018)

The district is named after the road bridge of the same name, Pont Kennedy, over the Niger River, about one and a half kilometers away , which was opened in 1970. It is bordered to the north by the Center Régional AGRHYMET , to the east by the Gawèye district , to the south by the Kirkissoye district and to the west, beyond National Road 27 , to the Banga Bana district . Pont Kennedy covers an area of approximately 37.3 hectares . The district lies on an alluvial floor that allows infiltration. The groundwater is at risk of being polluted.

The standard scheme for street names in Pont Kennedy is rue KI 1 , where the French rue for street is followed by KI for Kirkissoye and finally a number. This goes back to a project to name streets in Niamey in 2002, in which the city was divided into 44 zones, each with its own letter abbreviations. These zones mostly do not coincide with the administrative boundaries of the eponymous districts. The rue KI 1 scheme is not only used in Kirkissoye itself, but also in Pont Kennedy, among other places.

history

Pont Kennedy was created in the 1970s when the city of Niamey began to expand onto the right bank of the Niger River. During the uranium boom from 1977 to 1980, employees from Niamey mines in the north of the country bought land here. In the 1980s, Pont Kennedy and Gawèye were administratively merged into one district.

population

At the 2012 census, Pont Kennedy had 5,617 residents in 996 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 6,518 in 995 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 5,056 in 920 households.

Infrastructure

The public primary school Ecole primaire de Pont Kennedy was founded in 1985.
