The Center Régional AGRHYMET (long form: Center régional de formation et d'application en agrométéorologie et hydrologie opérationnelle ) is an educational and research institution for agro-meteorology and hydrology in Niamey in Niger .

Location and organization

The Center Régional AGRHYMET is located in the northeast of the Niamey V arrondissement on the right bank of the Niger River . To the west are the grounds of the Abdou Moumouni University Niamey and the Karadjé district , to the south the Pont Kennedy district . Administratively, the facility forms its own urban district (quartier) , which is also recorded separately in censuses. In the 2012 census, 59 people lived here in three households.

The Center Régional AGRHYMET is an institution of the intergovernmental organization Comité permanent Inter-Etats de Lutte contre la Sécheresse dans le Sahel (CILSS). The research focuses on the forecast of rainfall and hydrological conditions as well as the observation of rainfall, surface water, vegetation and pasture use in West Africa .

The Center Régional AGRHYMET trains senior technicians and engineers in the four areas of agro-meteorology, crop protection , hydrology and maintenance of instruments and microcomputers and offers four master’s courses on targeted management of natural resources , climate change and sustainable development , sustainable plant and environmental protection and sustainable land management . Around 1200 students completed these courses from 1975 to 2013.

The Center Régional AGRHYMET was founded in 1974 following the drought that hit the Sahel in the early 1970s . It should provide meteorological and hydrological training and research in the CILSS member states. Following an agreement between the CILSS and the West African Economic Community in December 2009, the activities of the Center Régional AGRHYMET were expanded to all of West Africa.
