BankTrack is an international control, campaign and NGO support organization that focuses on private banks and the activities they fund. The association is an integral part of the global community of NGOs focused on the entire financial sector (multilateral and national development banks, export credit agencies, private and institutional investors, etc.)

The association uses campaigns , lobbying and research to achieve its goals. BankTrack focuses primarily on the work of private banks and their participation in projects that pose a risk to the environment, society or human rights. The association publishes reports focusing on sustainability in the banking sector, which are used by many organizations, banks and analysts.

aims

  • Tracking banks' involvement in financing operations that have a negative impact on people or the planet, in order to make information about this financing generally available to the public;
  • Running campaigns in collaboration with partners to discourage banks from funding certain projects and making sustainability commitments;
  • Networking of activists from all over the world in order to optimize the joint efforts for change in the banking sector.
  • Assisting NGOs and nonprofits that focus on banking by providing them with various tools.

history

BankTrack, which has existed as an independent organization since 2015, emerged from the network of the same name, consisting of 40 organizations, including Greenpeace , Rainforest Action Network and various national branches of Friends of the Earth . This network was formally established in 2004 and built on initiatives that led to the publication of the “Declaration of Collevecchio”. This declaration was the first declaration by civil society on the role of the financial sector and sustainability and was signed by over 100 organizations from all over the world (including Germany: BUND , Urgewald and Euronatur ).

Equatorial principles

The association has closely monitored the development of the Equator Principles , a voluntary set of standards for the identification, assessment and management of social and environmental risks in project finance, since its inception.

financing

The association operates strictly independently of the financial sector and does not accept any form of support from financial institutions. BankTrack is largely financed by grants from foundations and donations.

Publications

Publications are available in English on the association's website. Dossiers on the projects and processes examined (e.g. Dakota Access Pipeline or Mountaintop Removal Mining ) are published there under the category “Dodgy Deals”.
