places

The following villages belong to the municipality:

  • the main town Castricum, where the municipal administration is located (almost 20,000 inhabitants)
  • Limmen, in the middle of the tulip fields
  • Bakkum, a suburb of the main town Castricum
  • Castricum aan Zee , a seaside resort on the North Sea
  • Akersloot , in the middle of meadows, on the banks of the lake "Alkmaardermeer"
  • the small hamlet of Wouden

Location and economy

The municipality is located on the North Sea coast and in the dunes south of Alkmaar and Heiloo . The village of Castricum has a train station on the Nieuwediep – Amsterdam line . Akersloot is located on the motorway between Amsterdam and Alkmaar.

The proximity of the sea, the beach and the partly beautifully wooded dunes made Castricum a popular residence for commuters from neighboring cities from around 1920. There have also long been a number of small sanatoriums for people who seek healing from their illnesses by breathing in the sea air. Tourism is also important. The soil of Limmen allows the cultivation of tulips , carnations , hyacinths and other flower bulbs. Cattle breeding predominates in the polders around Akersloot.

history

Akersloot was a far more important village in the Middle Ages than it is now; it had its own jurisdiction .

Castricum is said to owe its name to a Roman army camp ( Castra ); probably that's not right. The fact is, however, that traces of settlement from Roman times and older have been found. Because of floods and the harsh climate, the area was uninhabited from around AD 250 to around 750. During the Eighty Years War in 1573, like Akersloot, it was devastated by the Spaniards who besieged Alkmaar .

Bakkum did not come to this municipality until 1812, Limmen in 2003. Limmen, which is also very old, did not develop properly until around 1900, when the presence of good connections (railway connection 1870) made the cultivation and export of flower bulbs profitable and profitable.

For Castricum there was a battle during the October 6, 1799 Second Coalition war between troops from England and Russia on one side and the France of Napoleon Bonaparte on the other side. At that time, the majority of the Dutch in the region were still on the French side and many helped the French troops. After the Russians and British had conquered Alkmaar , in an offensive to create a bridgehead across the North Sea , they were defeated by the French in an eight-hour battle at Castricum, which sealed the failure of the Allied invasion of Holland. After the fighting, the villages were devastated. Shortly afterwards the victory of the French on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris was shown with the note: "Alkmaer".
