The Bank of Shanghai Corporation Limited (BOSC) is a municipal commercial bank based in Pudong ( Shanghai ) in the People's Republic of China . With total assets of approx. 278 billion US dollars in 2018, it is one of the 100 largest financial institutions worldwide.

history

The bank was founded in December 1995 to provide credit to local businesses during China's economic opening. In September 1999 and December 2001, the Bank of Shanghai received equity investments from the International Finance Corporation , the World Bank , Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and the Shanghai Commercial Bank .

On December 11, 2013, HSBC sold its 8.0% stake in the Bank of Shanghai to the Spanish multinational banking group Banco Santander , making it the third largest shareholder. The two largest owners are the Shanghai municipal government (26.64%) and the Chinese government (12.1%). State-owned companies collectively hold a majority of the shares.

In 2016, the Bank of Shanghai applied for listing to go public. The bank has been part of the SSE 50 index of the Shanghai Stock Exchange since 2017 .
