The Bank of Uganda ( Swahili : Benki Kuu ya Uganda ) is the central bank of Uganda . The bank was established by law of parliament in 1966 and is 100% owned by the government but is not a government agency. The head office of the bank is in Kampala . In June 2019, the bank employed 1,066 people.

structure

The Board of Directors of the Bank of Uganda is the bank's top political decision-making body. The governor or, in his absence, the deputy governor chairs the meeting.

The duties and powers of the Board of Directors are set out in the Bank of Uganda Act . This law makes the board of directors responsible for the general management of the bank's business. The board of directors formulates guidelines and ensures that all tasks to be performed by the bank in accordance with the statutes are carried out.

The President of Uganda appoints both the governor and the deputy governor on the advice of the Cabinet for renewable terms of five years. Additional board members (no fewer than four and no more than six) are appointed by the Minister of Finance for a renewable term of three years. The treasury secretary is an ex officio member of the board.
