The Banter See is a lake in Wilhelmshaven , Lower Saxony . It is a former harbor basin .

description

The lake is located in a recreational area and is used for sailing, surfing, diving, canoeing and as a bathing lake . The Klein Wangerooge outdoor pool is located by the lake. The bathing water quality has been monitored since 1991, usually without any complaints. In 2003 and 2005, however, the pool was closed for at least 14 days during the bathing season.

In the Middle Ages, the village of Banter Kirchspiel was located near today's Banter See. During the construction of the Wilhelmshaven harbors , the western port and intermediate port were created here, which was divided by the Grodendamm in 1948, whereby the western part was closed with the former western port and now forms the Banter See.

During the Second World War , the Tirpitzhafen and the Westwerft were located here.

In 2012, the 7.5 km long “Banter See circular route”, which had been planned since the 1970s and had already been implemented in sections, was completed by the city of Wilhelmshaven.

The brackish water lake is used by the sport fishing association Wilhelmshaven eV as fishing waters.

On the north side of the Banter See there is a common tern colony , which has been intensively studied by the Institute for Bird Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland" since the 1980s.
