Banter parish was the name of a parish in the area of today's city of Wilhelmshaven, which was destroyed by the Antoni flood in 1511 . After the fall of Bant, the remaining land was added to the neighboring Neuende . The remaining residents visited the new church. Only the name of the municipality of Bant , newly created by the Oldenburg law on November 1, 1879 , now a district of Wilhelmshaven and the artificially created "Banter Ruin" remind of this former parish.

Origin of name

The origin of the name Bant is unclear. It is very likely that it is a field name that can no longer be interpreted today. More than 60% of the former area of Bant is now in the Jade Bay area .

description

The Banter parish was a collection of individual Wurten , which were about 150-200 meters apart. Of these sausages, the one on which the church of the former parish stood and which today is reminiscent of the artificially created Banter ruin near Grodendamm is still preserved today . There was also the "Große Banter Wirth" and the "Kleine Banter Wirth". The "Kleine Banter Wirth" was in the area of the former old cemetery on the old dike. The "Große Banter Wirth" was located in the area of today's Wiesbaden Bridge . Both were leveled when the port was built. Maps from the second half of the 19th century still show these sausages.

history

The beginnings of settlement in the village of Bant go back to pre-Christian times. Excavations on the "Kleine Banter Wirth" produced finds from around the year 0. Excavations on the "Große Banter Wirth" brought finds from the 7th and 8th centuries to light. The Wurt, on which the so-called Banter Ruin stands today, was the target of several archaeological excavations from the 1860s. Among other things, several ornate stone coffins were found just below the surface, which due to the ornaments can be found in the 8th – 11th centuries. Date of the century. The Banter parish was first mentioned in history in 1304 as the main town in the “Banter Viertel” district of the same name.

Antoni flood

The devastating Antoni flood on January 16, 1511, after which the Jade Bay had its greatest historical extent, destroyed the village. The Banter church was still on its wurt, but had to be dammed in 1519 or 1520 (according to Halpaap not until 1529) and fell into disrepair. In the year 1551 it is said that it “itzund waters halven passed away and became null and void”. Its foundations were rediscovered in 1867. A bell from the old Banter parish is still in service in Tettens today .
