The Baptist Union of Scotland is the main association of Baptist churches in Scotland.

history

The beginnings of Scottish Baptism go back to the middle of the 17th century. Different doctrinal views also led to a split very early on, which could only be overcome in the second half of the 19th century. While one group, the so-called Scotch Baptists , took a very strict position in the doctrine of predestination , the other group, the so-called English Baptists , stuck to a rather moderate Calvinism. A conference in Edinburgh in 1869 led to the unification of both groups and thus to the establishment of the Baptist Union of Scotland . 51 congregations sent their delegates to the founding assembly, representing around 3500 members.

organization

The structure of the Scottish Baptist Union corresponds to the Baptist Union of Great Britain . While the local congregations have extensive autonomy in questions of their lives and their teaching, the Union's field of activity is limited to joint missionary work, training and further education of full-time and voluntary workers, and the production and dissemination of Christian literature. The headquarters of the Scottish Baptist Union is in Glasgow .
